London Underground trains that ‘put customers first’ scoop two awards at the 2009 Railway Interiors Expo 'Innovation & Excellence' Awards

London Underground wins the prestigious ‘Design of the Year’ Award as well as the ‘Security Innovation’ Award for its new state-of-the art trains

Wednesday November 25th: London Underground has today scooped two of the awards at the annual Railway Interiors Expo ‘Innovation & Excellence Awards’ ceremony. The show is the only annual rail exhibition dedicated to the design, concepts and technology of railway and mass transit interiors and the awards uniquely acknowledge this important and innovative sector of the industry.

The most prestigious of the awards is that awarded for the ‘Design of the Year’ and there was universal praise this year for the enormous upgrade investment undertaken by London Underground, which has seen it specify and purchase 47 new, state-of-the-art trains manufactured by Bombardier. The new trains have been recognised by the judging panel for incorporating intelligent and thoughtful design features that will improve efficiency, passenger comfort and safety.

Yetunde Okurounmu, Project Planning Manager, London Underground Upgrades Policy, said: “We’ve put the customer at the heart of the ‘09 train stock design. We spent considerable time understanding what it is they need and building that into the end product. The design is a result of good collaborative working with Bombardier Trains. The 09 train stock is the first fully accessible train fleet to be introduced on the underground.”

The trains will also be the first new fleet on the London Underground fully conforming to the ‘The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations’ (RVAR), which require significant design considerations for disabled people.

London Underground also won the 'Security' Award for the safety and security features incorporated into the new 2009TS trains. The new trains include two CCTV digital cameras per carriage and there is also an increase in the number of Passenger Emergency Alarms which allow customers to speak directly to the train operator. A new feature of this system is that the operator is now able to view the CCTV image associated with each alarm, enabling them to get appropriate assistance more easily.

Also worthy of note was the award won by UK rail operator, First Great Western, for ‘Passenger Infotainment innovation of the year’. The award acknowledges the excellence of its ‘aircraft-like’ on-board entertainment system that offers passengers extensive programme options including channel for drama, action, comedy and news on the move.

“These awards have recognized the outstanding achievements of the past year in what is a fascinating, fast-moving and highly competitive industry and where we are increasingly seeing suppliers react quickly to the demands of today’s travellers”, says Tony Robinson, founder of Railway Interiors Expo.
